Early 20th century Carl Zeiss Jena Lensmeter. Height 35.5cm Model number 2422. Carl Zeiss is a world renowned producer of optical instruments. Founded in 1846, its' founder was a perfectionist. Zeiss would often destroy apprentices work that he considered to be substandard using the workshop anvil. The company was founded in Jena in Eastern Germany. When Germany was divided between East and West following the Second World War, the company continued to manufacture in East Germany. Another company using the Zeiss name was also founded in post war West Germany. Carl Zeiss Jena continued to manufacture very high quality optical products behind the Iron Curtain. The company also had their own football team that competed in the East German Oberliga. They once played Newport County in the quarter finals of the European Cup Winners Cup in 1981.
